It is difficult to sustain parody through the length of a novel, even a short ( pages) one such as The Ascent of Rum Doodle. Yet W. E. Bowman's subtle humor seldom palls and indeed the book grows funnier the further one reads. The Ascent of Rum Doodle purports to be a report of a British mountain-climbing expedition, and the tone is perfect/5(9). This gentle, deadly parody of the tight-arsed old school of British exploration narratives is seemingly a cult book among mountaineers, but it has been virtually unknown to the reading public since Rum Doodle does for mountaineering what Three Men in a Boat did for Thames-going or Catch did for the Second World War. Since its first publication in , the words Rum Doodle and Rumdoodle have been taken by people around the world (many of them fans of the book) and used for a variety of purposes. There is a sleeping bag called a Rumdoodle, a climbing company, a horse, and even a Rock Band!In fact, the Rum Doodles around the world are multiplying - there's now a pizza .

Led by the reliably under-insightful Binder, a team of seven British men including Dr Prone (constantly ill); Jungle the route finder (constantly lost), Constant the diplomat (constantly arguing) and 3, Yogistani porters, set out to conquer the highest peak in the Himalayas. The Ascent of Rum Doodle purports to be a report of a British mountain-climbing expedition, and the tone is perfect/5(). But, THE ASCENT OF RUM DOODLE, at pages, is a quick read in a small package amenable to inclusion in a backpack for the hike down into the Grand Canyon last week.

During a longer than expected stop at Indian Gardens on the Bright Angel Trail, it, between the arrival of the mule trains, proved a most amusing, four-star diversion while I /5(). The Ascent of Rum Doodle, for me, was a notable exception. So I am noting it.

Somehow I managed to read this book for the first time in the shadow of Mt Blanc (although "to climb Mont Blanc by the Grépon route is one thing; to climb Rum Doodle is, as Totter once said, quite another") in December at an absurd conference where I was one of the /5().

The Ascent of Rum Doodle is seriously one of the funniest books I've ever read. It's silly nature belies the satire of machismo and very British "stiff-upper-lip"ness. I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a hilarious read.

Give it a couple of chapters and you won't be disappointed. 1 person found this helpful. The Ascent of Rum Doodle, for me, was a notable exception. So I am noting it.
